TMO Overview - Lipid Modulating Agents
Dyslipidemia is a disease characterized by abnormal levels of lipids in the circulatory system. The most common forms of dyslipidemia involve elevation of total serum cholesterol (TSC), elevation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), elevation of triglycerides (TG), and a reduction of high-density lipoprotein (HDL). Lipid modulating agents target varying aspects of dyslipidemia, and are often chosen as treatment options. Thanks to aggressive screening and treatment, the market for lipid modulating agents will continue to see strong volume growth. AVOS predicts that the number of individuals suffering from dyslipidemia, regardless of diagnosis, will increase from 112.4 million in 2008 to 117.7 million in 2013. Despite this significant volume growth, AVOS predicts that a general lack of innovation will cause generics - among them, atorvastatin, launching in 2010 - to capture over 50% of the lipid modulating agent market by 2013. As a result of the impact of generic blockbusters during the forecast period, and robust growth among HDL-raising therapies, the market for lipid modulating agents is projected to increase from $19.8 billion in 2008 to $24.4 billion in 2013 after peaking in 2010 at $24.6 billion.
